Chicago Tornadoes: What You Need to Know





Past History of tornadoes hit Chicago

There have been many tornadoes that have hit Chicago over the years. The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that at least 174 tornadoes have touched down in the Chicago area since 1871. Of those, 14 have been rated F3 or higher on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which means they had winds of at least 158 mph.

The most destructive tornado to hit Chicago was on August 28, 1990.

 This tornado was rated F5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, making it the only F5 tornado to ever strike the city. The tornado killed 29 people, injured 350, and caused $165 million in damage.

Other notable tornadoes that have hit Chicago include:
  • A tornado on June 20, 2008, that killed 8 people and injured 18.
  • A tornado on April 21, 1967, that killed 31 people and injured 500.
  • A tornado on April 11, 1953, that killed 16 people and injured 350.

The NWS says that the Chicago area is most susceptible to tornadoes during the spring and summer months.

 The agency advises residents to be aware of the weather conditions and to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued.

Here are some tips for staying safe during a tornado:

  • If you are indoors, go to the lowest level of the building and stay away from windows.
  • If you are outdoors, find a ditch or other low-lying area and lie flat on the ground.
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and get out of the car. Lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area

Tornadoes Touch Down in Chicago Area, Causing Damage




Tornado Touchdowns Confirmed in Chicago Area, Storm Damage Reported

The National Weather Service has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area on Wednesday, July 13, 2023.

One tornado touched down in Cicero, and another touched down in Huntley
As many as eight tornadoes may have touched down in the area, including near O'Hare Airport, in Countryside, La Grange, McCook, South Elgin, Carol Stream, and Oswego.

The tornado in Cicero touched down at approximately 1:30 p.m. CDT and tracked for approximately 2 miles. The tornado in Huntley touched down at approximately 2:00 p.m. CDT and tracked for approximately 3 miles.

There have been reports of damage to homes and businesses in the affected areas. There have also been reports of injuries, but the extent of the injuries is not yet known.

The National Weather Service is continuing to survey the damage and will release more information as it becomes available.

In addition to the tornadoes, the storms also brought heavy rain and hail to the Chicago area. The heavy rain caused flooding in some areas, and the hail damaged cars and property.

The storms have since moved out of the Chicago area, but there is a chance of more storms later today. Residents are advised to stay alert for severe weather warnings.
